Apricot: Questions & Ideas (Part 1)

How can I make an apricot glaze out of fresh apricots?

This workes well with raspberries, and I think it will work with apricots. Take about a quarter of your apricots, peel and slice them. Put them in a pot with about a cup of sugar and a half a cup of water and boil them on medium heat. Reduce the mix until it is about as thick as a cream style soup. This will make what is called a coulis. The sugar and water should puree the fruit and give you a smooth sauce. mix that with the rest of your fruit, and bake it off like normal. The procedure I just gave can be used on any soft fruit to make a dessert sauce. If you need to put in the blender and puree it.

How do you grow an apricot from a apricot seed?

Wash the pit in 20% bleach (1 part bleach, 9 parts water) for one minute, rinse, dry, then put it in the refrigerator, in a plastic bag, for 6 weeks. Then carefully crack open the pit, remove the seed inside, soak the seed for 2 days in water (there are naturally occurring chemical germination inhibitors in the seed) then plant the seed.

Apricot tree, dose it need watering at this time of year?

Any plant growing close to a wall or fence will receive less water than if it was planted out in the open. So if your tree is looking as if it requires water then it probably does. The frost then sunshine may have made the leaves a little droopy but it is likely that the tree needs water. Apricots are winter hardy so whilst the tree will lose it's leaves during winter it will survive. This link will take you to the RHS advice page for apricot trees.

My jar of Apricot Preserves claims to have no preservatives, so how are the apricots still preserved?

If there are no preservatives in your apricot preserves, how can you be sure there are apricots in it? If there are indeed apricots in jars of apricot preserves, then what can be found in jars of baby food? Or Kit Kats? I like apricots. I think there is more to them on the inside than you can see on the outside. I've heard them described as fleshy, but I don't think that sounds like a desirable quality for a fruit, or any food for that matter.Do they make chayote squash preserves? I'm thinking of starting a chayote squash farm.

How do you take care of an apricot tree?

The maintanance of your tree would not really affect the taste of the fruit. If it looks edible then it generally will be edible. Since your tree is already producing fruit it shouldn't be difficult to look after. Just make sure it gets enough water and, in winter, trim a couple of branches.

What is the differnce between peach and apricot?

Peaches and apricots are totally different fruits with different flavours so it is difficult to say which tastes better, it will depend on who you ask. I prefer peaches myself but it is a close race :)

Apricots are actually more closely related to plums and no, they do not have a fuzzy skin like a peach. Dried apricots are very popular and are sweet and chewy. Try the brown dried apricot, it is easier to find the orange ones but they are treated with sulphates and may not agree with you.

Peaches are low in saturated fat, cholesteral and sodium, and are high in vitamin C, dietary fibre, vitamin A, niacin and potassium. They would be a helpful addition to a weight loss program.

Apricots are rich in beta carotene, which becomes vitamin A in your body, vitamin C, and has some niacin as well, and has potassium to, and are a good source of fibre also.

So, both are good for you.

Health wise, I prefer apricots because the dried fruit is a convenient portable snack.

CJJ Berry has a number of books on winemaking. All are pitched at beginners. There are several other books on making country wines. Most of them will have at least one recipe for apricot wine. It is better if all the apricots are completely ripened. That way, you have to add less sugar to the mix.

What eye makeup would look okay with apricot-colored lip gloss?

How long does it take til my apricot tree to have fruit?

Keep in mind that Apricots bloom several weeks earlier than apples and are hit by late frosts. I had apricots for years and the blooms always got froze. I would say they may bloom the third year after planting.

What spray should I use on my apricot tree?

You really need to observe what pest is the problem- you are shooting in the dark until you do.  These are very young trees, and I think I would be aggressive in protecting them- the root system isn't established well, they can't afford much leaf damage.

I use a rotenone + pyrethrin spray or rotenone powder. Rotenone is organic, it breaks down quickly in the environment, but it needs to be handled with care- it can be toxic to the person applying it. By the time a pest problem becomes noticeable, another insect that preys on the pest is usually starting to arrive and reproduce. Spraying poison wipes out both the pest and predator. But these are pretty fragile trees. I would attack the pests this year, maybe let them run their course next year when the trees are established.

Can I use apricot scrub and then tan during the summer?

I wouldn't suggest it (getting a tan after you use any form of facial or body scrub), as your skin may be more vulnerable to the sunburn. The purpose of scrubs is to peel off dead skin & bring out the younger cells of the skin, if you subject your skin to sun damage after you do that, then there is a good chance sunburn will be worse off or maybe the hyperpigmentation that follows after that.

very few people actually realize the harmful effects of excessive sunlight on skin, cancer is one of them.I would recommend sun block instead so you can optimize enjoying the sun. Tanned skin color is overrated. People who are dark always want to get lighter & light skinned people are obssessed with getting a darker color. It is one of the reasons why white peple who love getting the tan are more prone to skin cancer & also look older than their age. The curse of asian skin is that we look younger than our age usually because we love putting on lotion, moisturizers & anything with milk or SPF on and try to stay away from too much sunlight.

What happens when a plum tree is pollinated by apricot pollen?

Classification of species that are similar is a very tricky field and we are constantly changing how we define them. However in the particular case of plum and apricot, not they cannot interbreed.

Also by definition, organisms that are not in the same species cannot reproduce to produce viable offspring. Horse and donkey produce mule. But mule is not viable. So that does not count. However like I mentioned earlier, classification is messy and sloppy, there are many mistakes in our classification so there may be a few exceptions to the rule that inter specie breeding is impossible. Simply because our classification is wrong.
